I met the subject at the entrance to the old city of Carcassonne in the south of France. It was a bitterly cold day, the man looked exhausted, tired and desperate yet seemed invisible to everyone that walked past. I wanted to paint the books and carrier bags in detail as I felt that they added so much to a description of the subjects life, the books an escape, the bag carried all his world belongings
