“The Chaining of Joe Crow” is a painting of a homeless man that I met in Winchester in 2017. I was struck by the kindness, generosity and hope by this man yet also the fear that seemed to drown his eyes. I wanted to exaggerate the portrait by giving one side a feeling of hope and light and the other side a feeling of despair. I also added the chains to symbolise the difficulty the homeless have in finding housing when they do not have a permanent address. I also added the sign “Homeless” to show how the word itself defines, controls and ultimately destroys.
