“Black and Red Lines” is a painting of a homeless girl living on the streets of New York. The girl is the same girl as in my painting “Mary”. I wanted to put a real spotlight on the figure and create a painting that gives the impression of silence, hopelessness and loneliness and this is why I used the back ground as two strong lines. I added the sign “Look at me Mum” as I wanted to create a question in the viewers mind, I wanted to know how a mother would feel realising her daughter was in this terrible situation. I also changed the newspaper headlines from “Hispanic Heritage Month” to “Homeless Heritage Month”. Finally I named the painting “Black and Red Lines” to demonstrate how the homeless feel invisible.
